Jailbreaking is a form of hacking an Apple device to free it from the company’s restrictions such as the ability to install paid applications without even putting down a cent, and also changing the device’s boring and too common theme, all through the use of sets of programs and tools called custom kernels (iOS Jailbreaking, ND). It also has some significance because users will be given a chance to modify their devices and customize them according to their preferences. Although jailbreaking Apple products is prohibited by the company due to its risks (Terms About Jailbreaking, 2011), it may also be beneficial because of the new features it may bring (Jailbreaking Your iPhone: The pros and cons, 2010).
The risks or rather, the cons of jailbreaking an iDevice includes losing its authenticity because of the modifications that will be made, danger of degrading its system security thus, probability of installing malwares. Since the device is modified which is against Apple, its warranty will also be voided (Jailbreaking Your iPhone: The Pros and Cons, 2009).
The cons might be a big thing to be worried about but there are also pros to be considered and to be enjoyed. By jailbreaking, several advanced features will be unlocked: all the apps from the App Store will be all free (even the paid ones!); also, a new store called Cydia will be installed where a user can download the best stuffs an iDevice could ever have; and the best part is, if the user is still worried about the battling cons, he/she can fully reverse the hack and bring back the device’s authenticity as well as its warranty ( 5 Reasons to Jailbreak Your iPhone and 5 Reasons Not, 2010).
With all these cons and pros, it’s all up to the user whether to jailbreak or not. So if ever you have one on your hands, I will ask you, don’t you want to jailbreak your iDevice?
